How to Declutter Before You Move into Your New Home

This post was written by Paige Giles

One of the greatest joys of moving into a new home is how clean, clutter-free and open a new home feels. If you have a lot of clutter in your old home, there’s a very good chance it could follow you as you start to pack your moving boxes.

While decluttering before your move takes a little extra effort, it can help save you both time and money in the long run and will make your move less stressful. Here are a few tips to help ensure that your new home starts off beautiful and clutter-free.

Start Cleaning WAY Early

If you wait until the last minute to declutter and pack, you might find it irresistible to throw everything into a box and adopt an “I’ll deal with it later” attitude. Not only will that clutter follow you into your new home in the Utah County area, it will also take you a lot longer to sort everything out.

If you know you’re moving in a month or two, plan on tackling the packing process early on. By starting the decluttering process far in advance, you won’t feel overwhelmed, and you’ll have ample time to prepare for an organized move.

Take it One Room at a Time

Just the mere thought of decluttering an entire home can make it feel like an impossible task. The best way to tackle this job is to focus on one room at a time to keep you from becoming overwhelmed.

By dedicating your decluttering efforts to one room a day, you’ll find that this process will be less intimidating and go a lot smoother.

The Declutter “Rule of 3 Boxes”

Dedicate three boxes to each room: stuff to keep, stuff to throw away, and stuff to donate/sell. This helps to keep the process organized, and once you start unpacking the boxes in your fabulous new home you’ll be free of items that are unnecessary and unpacking will be less stressful.

As Yourself the Big Question

The process of decluttering will require you to make some tough choices. Instead of asking yourself, “Should I keep this?” instead ask, “Do I want to pack, move, and then unpack this item?” Take a lesson from Marie Kondo, the online decluttering guru, and ask yourself if it will make you happy, or spark joy to see it in your new home.

If you have trouble making decisions like this, it can help to have a designated “Big Question” person working alongside you. By inviting a friend or family member to help, it can be easier to discern what should be kept, discarded or donated.

Decluttering Your Old Home Before Your Big Move
